Why The Air Around You Matters

A few verified facts about what's actually in the air indoors, and why dry air affects how you feel at home.

Indoor air can be more polluted than outdoor air

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air, since dust, cooking fumes, and everyday household particles build up in enclosed spaces with limited air exchange.

PM2.5: the particle size that matters most

PM2.5 refers to particles 2.5 micrometres or smaller — small enough to be inhaled deep into the lungs. The World Health Organization's 2021 global air quality guidelines recommend an annual average of no more than 5 µg/m³ and a 24-hour average of no more than 15 µg/m³.

Dry air affects more than comfort

Indoor relative humidity that falls well below 30% can dry out the nose, throat, and skin. Organisations such as ASHRAE generally recommend keeping indoor humidity in the 30–50% range for comfort and respiratory wellbeing.

Humidity and airborne viruses

Several published studies have linked low indoor humidity to longer survival and spread of some airborne viruses, which is one reason humidity control is often suggested alongside ventilation during cold and flu season.
